It Started in the Grandmas' Kitchen…
It started in the kitchen at my grandmas table smelling freshly baked cookies, bars and cakes. Something was always freshly baked ready to share for morning coffee. My “town” Grandma Veva was always baking. Her pies were the best. My “farm” Grandma Blanche would go to her gardens for her ingredients to bake, talk about fresh strawberries. My mother who lived on the Easter farm made the BEST sugar cookies! That recipe is a well kept secret! She was especially famous for her Thanksgiving turkey cookies.
My mother was brave. I can't believe it but at age 7, my mom would let me take a step stool, mix my own cookie dough and use the big oven by myself! That’s where my love of baking began…
I am the oldest generation now and with that comes all the recipes handed down from generations…and I am mean GENERATIONS. My journey started when I started sorting recipes. Many recipes were over 175 years old. Amazing! …I discovered letters written with recipes. These recipes told my family and community history. I dug out the “favorite” of each generation and recreated the recipe with new twists.
I have been sharing cookies, cupcakes, cakes and wedding cakes with my family, friends, their friends and my music students for years. With the encouragement of my tasters, my dream of “The FAT Cookie” bakery has come true. Why the “fat” in the cookie? Well they are BIG and FAT so they can be shared around your kitchen table too. My cookies, cakes and cupcakes are from scratch and SO GOOD!
SIDE NOTE….My Grandmas and Mom were not bakers by profession but piano teachers. I am a mother of five, grandmother of three, music teacher by profession for 36 years and I LOVE TO BAKE!
